The Federal Aviation Administration is working on a short-term fix to the problems at the Newark airport that includes technical repairs and cutting flights to keep traffic manageable while dealing with a shortage of controllers.

Experts said while the air system is safe, it is definitely being stressed out — which is why we might see fewer flight options this summer.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy revealed during a congressional hearing that there were more previously undisclosed outages involving air traffic control systems at Newark airport. Kris Van Cleave has details.

In a letter to customers sent Friday, United CEO Scott Kirby said the Federal Aviation Administration’s longstanding staffing problems finally "boiled over" this week, as technological problems caused dozens of diverted flights, and hundreds of canceled and delayed ones. Kirby said 20% of the air traffic controllers walked off the job as well.

United Airlines on Tuesday said it expects flight issues to ease at Newark Liberty International Airport in the coming weeks as runway construction concludes and the Federal Aviation Administration considers cuts to the schedule.
