Throngs of peaceful protesters were expected to take to Bay Area streets on Saturday as part of nationwide “No Kings” rallies seeking to cast President Donald Trump as an authoritarian ruler.
Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in dozens of Bay Area cities Saturday as part of the second nationwide No Kings rallies protesting President Trump's administration.
Organizers expect big numbers, with protesters citing concerns about immigration enforcement, limits on free speech and an increase in authoritarian rhetoric from the Trump administration.
"The First Amendment protects your right to assemble and express your views through protest," the American Civil Liberties protesters' rights guide states. "However, police and other government officials are allowed to place certain narrow restrictions on the exercise of speech rights."
We will not be silenced, we will not back down, and we will not allow threats to erode our constitutional rights,” Indivisible Detroit said in a release.
In Lansing, demonstrators crowded outside of the Michigan Capitol for the event, marking one of largest rallies on the Capitol lawn this year.
Protests took place in Sacramento, the state's capital, and in several Bay Area cities. Organizers estimate thousands of people gathered for the demonstrations.
