California Democrats are taking up their proposed constitutional amendment to temporarily redraw their congressional maps, hours after Republicans in the Texas House passed new maps of their own.

State lawmakers moved quickly to create new districts that could help Democrats flip five congressional seats. Their plan still requires voter approval.

Democratic leaders from coast to coast ripped Texas state Republicans on Wednesday for approving a new Congressional map that gives the GOP an opportunity to net five additional House seats in next year’s midterm elections.
