Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, who is mired in a 1-for-28 slump and leads the majors with 17 errors, was benched Sunday night against rival Boston.

José Caballero will play shortstop in Volpe’s place on Sunday, his second start at shortstop since coming over from the Rays at the trade deadline just over three weeks ago.

With Anthony Volpe in the midst of yet another slump, the shortstop found himself out of the New York Yankees’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Boston Red Sox. Volpe has been a mainstay in the Yankees’ lineup since winning the team’s starting shortstop job out of spring training as a rookie in 2023.
