Major changes are coming to the Illinois driver’s license exam and renewal process, particularly for older adults.

Illinois raised the mandatory testing age from 75 to 79 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Current law requires drivers age 79 or 80 to take a driving test to renew their license.

The tests were last updated two years ago. The DMV analyzes questions to try and dump too-difficult ones, those that have been used too often and any that should be rewritten, Finkel said.
