Monday is Day 1 of Metro Detroit's biggest construction project, eastbound Interstate 696, and drivers are bracing for years of changes.
DETROIT – The countdown is over as MDOT crews launched the final phase of the I-696 project Monday. A stretch of eastbound I-696 -- between M-10 and I-75 -- will be closed for about two years. It’s not just drivers who are concerned about navigating the challenges.
Michigan State Police in Detroit responded to the crash, which occurred on westbound I-696 east of Dequindre Road at 5:25 a.m. on Sunday.

“Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $2.96 per gallon for regular unleaded, which is a new 2025-low. This price is 7 cents less than this time last month and 49 cents less than this time last year,” according to AAA’s report Monday.
