Personally, I use the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 lens (about $370)--which, if money is tight, is quite a bit of savings over the f/1.4 lens at over $900.

Posted July 16, 2007. 70-200/2.8 is too heavy and slow of a lens for street photography, especially at night. If you want a tele get either 85/1.4 or 105/1.8. Personally, I would get a 28/2 and a 105/1.8 or 105/2. Forget about any kind of *_pod, your subjects would be sticking around for you to fiddle with your setup.

Oct 14, 2023 · The 100-400 (and I also have the F-mount 80-400mm/f4.5-5.6 that I previously used a lot) is my favorite lens for whale watching and Antarctic trips where I do a lot of photography from Zodiac landing boats. It should also be very good for African safaris as a second tele, in addition to some 500mm or 600mm lens.

Jan 22, 2024 · Now I have two rarely used AF-S 80-400 that have abysmal trade-in value (below $500 for a lens that cost $2700 at introduction and for which Nikon still wants some $2200 new). There are basically three advantages of the 80-400 over the 200-500: (a) lower weight, (b) faster AF, and (c)a more versatile zoom range for everyday photography.
