Johannes Kepler discovered that the orbits of all the planets around the Sun are elliptical. This is known in astronomy as Kepler's First Law of Planetary Motion. The closest point in the orbit is called the perihelion, while the furthest point is the aphelion. The next aphelion for planet Earth will take place on July 3, 2025, and the next perihelion will be on January 3, 2026.
