Queensland's Gulf Savannah Country is more than just scrub. Chillagoe Caves, Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes are more than just rocks. The locals that live and work out here are more than just people. And The Savannahlander is more than just a train. But don't take my word for it. Experience it for yourself. This week is roughly the 700th time I have driven the Savannahlander over the Newcastle Range. I know that may sound like a repetitive job and you may be wondering why I love doing it? The savannah has many gems in it's crown. Today, after nearly 10 years and 700 trips I finally got to see the centre diamond! Pics in comments. Wil🤠🐨 | The Savannahlander

🚂 Let’s Get the Savannahlander Back on Track The Savannahlander isn’t just a tourist train — it’s part of the fabric of the Gulf. But right now, it’s sitting there doing nothing because the Government won’t stump up for track and bridge repairs. They’ve spent billions on a new rail tunnel in Brisbane just to get people to work 10 minutes earlier — and we’re told there's no money for the bush? Fixing the Savannahlander would cost less than 1% of that. Shane Knuth MP and I are backing the call to

There are growing calls to save a popular outback tourist train line, damaged by recent disasters. Local MPs and train drivers say the Savannahlander is 'in limbo' with more than one-hundred-million dollars needed for track repairs. 7NEWS at 6pm. 📱Download the 7NEWS app: 7news.link/7newsapp #7NEWS | 7NEWS Cairns

Every single Savannahlander Driver knows never to trust those behind the wheel. Despite the 'Give Way' and 'Stop Signs' that are there to be obeyed, they rarely are. Internally we have a self imposed rule that on approach to level crossings that lack boom gates and flashing lights, we slow the train so that we're able to pull up safely before crossing the road if we needed. Both Sandra and I are very thankful to that rule today for if we were doing our 40kmph track speed, we may not be here to s

We've been getting lots of comments and questions regarding the condition of the line after the recent floods and to be honest, we don't know anymore than you do. All we know is that the track is set to reopen in February. In the meantime, the crews are doing their thing and working hard. Sandra got this footage of an empty Ballast Train on it's way up the range this morning. Seeing as it's empty, they must be using it to take soil and rock away from the site. 🎉 Yippee!!!! Today we had our first opportunity this year to do what we love doing! It was very impromptu last minute and the track is currently only open as far as Almaden, but sometimes you've gotta take those first baby steps, before you start running! Sandra 😎 | The Savannahlander

A few weeks ago, due to temporarily closed track, we relocated the railmotors over 3 days to the tablelands. Mutchilba was chosen as the unloading location due to flat land, no overhead power lines and accessibility. I took lots of videos over the 3 days but have only now put it into something that kinda makes sense. Here is the first of three videos. It's probably too long but it gives you a perspective of what we were up against. The relocation of 2026. Wil🤠 Savannah Guides Limited Unearth Et

Servicing the railmotors is very important. Usually all of that gets done in our depot in Cairns but under the current circumstances, we can't get to Cairns so what do we do? Back in 1995 when the Savannahlander first started, it could only operate between Mt Surprise and Forsayth. It did this for 3 years. Then in 1998, it started operating out of Cairns. But for those initial 3 years, all of the servicing was done in Mt Surprise. There's a service pit, a big shed and a workshop. Sure, it hasn't

Only 2 trips left to go for 2025 and with some nice early storms, the savannah is going to look absolutely bloody stunning. You'll have Sandra and Joe behind the controls for next week's trip and the Sandra and myself for the week after. So if you're looking for an authentic, Aussie railway experience full of wildlife, stories and a bunch of laughs, then you had better pack your bags and jump on board the Savannahlander! Pecha Kucha (Japanese for Chit Chat) is a voluntary group of people that basically get together to tell and share stories. Last Friday night, a Pecha Kucha presentation was held in Atherton. Nearly a dozen people from all walks of life got up on stage to tell a story, including 11 year old, Tiama. I first met Tiama when she was a toddler. Her Mum and Dad (Marco and Tammy) along with her brother (Tristan), have become dear friends over the last decade and are a very important part of our 'Savanna
