This is 18th-century Power Dressing! This lavish gown, called a court mantua, was crafted from silk brocade woven with real silver threads. It was worn in the 1760s by Lady Mary Rockingham, probably for her husband Charles’s investiture as a Knight of the Garter. The garment was an explicit, wearable statement of the couple’s wealth and influence. You can see this statement of status on display at @historicroyalpalaces (Kensington Palace).
