In the summer of 1864, West Chester was swept up in a curious craze: eating frogs! A local newspaper reported that demand for frogs’ legs was so high it nearly “extinguished the race on the Brandywine and near dams.” At the Mansion House Restaurant, nearly 100 frogs were sold in a single evening at ten cents each.
