Nature’s Tsunami Shield Mangroves In this video, I demonstrate how mangrove forests act as a natural barrier against tsunamis. Using a model, I recreate the impact of waves on coastal areas with mangrove protection. On one side, waves are generated to simulate a tsunami, while the center is planted with a miniature mangrove forest. Restoring mangroves is hard work. Puerto Rico’s mangroves are important, for both the economy and the environment. They protect coastlines from storms, and provide homes for wildlife like fish and manatees. But many of them were destroyed by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Many young adults in Puerto Rico face barriers to entry in the work force—including access to sustainable wages, the cost of higher education, and the minimum experience required for entry-level jobs.
