It’s hard to believe it’s been over a week since I was in Scarborough at the @modern_mosaic Forum. Here’s a video of some of the mosaics from the Piece Together exhibition. I loved seeing the variety of works on show - so many different ideas, materials and techniques. The exhibition is on until 14th November at Woodend Gallery, Scarborough and is definitely worth a visit! | Rachel Davies Mosaics

Want to add a more textured surface to your mosaic? One way to do this is to place all the pieces in one section at an angle. You’ll need to use tile adhesive/thinset to do this as it will enable the pieces to stay sitting at the angle you place them at. Here I’m using a mix of materials, including smalti (glass), porcelain tile and slate, to add more interest and create the effect of a wildflower meadow. This video features footage from my new Slate Mountain Landscape course, where you can lear

Just playing with my hammer and hardie, seeing how small I can cut the stone! I didn’t have a particular plan in mind when cutting this stone - I was just exploring its properties - what it was like to cut, what surfaces were revealed etc. Sometimes the prep work is the fun part! | Rachel Davies Mosaics

So if you fancy treating yourself to something for the new year, head on over to my website and see what’s there! | Rachel Davies Mosaics

Before I start making these mini mosaics, I plan out a rough design first, laying out pieces together to see how they might look. You can see this dry lay version behind the piece I’m working on here.If you’d like to learn more about making these mini pieces of mosaic art, I have a an online workshop available that takes you through the full process - from developing designs and preparing materials to putting the whole thing together. This month in my membership we are making mosaics inspired by seaweed. Here’s a few seaweed inspired mosaics I made as part of my 100 day project last year. Today I’m hosting a teaching session for members which will include a presentation and a practical demonstration with a focus on seaweed inspired mosaics. The recording will be available to catch up on, so if you fancy joining us this month, head on over to my website for all the details. Also, a reminder that a book featuring all 100 mosaic

I made this mosaic this week as a sample for the teaching session inside my membership programme. This month in the membership we are focusing on light, and this design was inspired by the patterns created by light coming through the trees. The material choice was inspired by the ice and snow we’ve had this week, so the mosaic looks more like snow on a muddy path than shadows created by trees, but that’s how things go sometimes! I’m just pleased I’ve had time to work on a little something creati

The edges of your mosaic can sometimes be a vulnerable area, particularly when you are setting slate on edge, so here’s a tip to help you create a neat and secure edge. 1. Use the edge of the board to help you add adhesive to the edge of your substrate. This ensures your pieces will have plenty of adhesive to secure them in place. 2. Set your pieces in place next to the edge of the board. 3. Use your palette knife to smooth away any adhesive that has oozed over the edge and spread it part way up

These little mosaics are a fun project to make. I usually lay the pieces roughly on a board to make sure I’m happy with the overall design. It also means that most of the prep work is done so when you are ready you can just enjoy setting everything into place! You can learn how to make mosaics like this in my online Mini Mosaic course. It’s a pre-recorded series of videos that you can watch at your own pace, as many times as you like. This week the course is part of the Cozy Fest Bundle, which i

Preparing slate for mosaics often involves splitting it into thinner pieces, then breaking them up further with a hammer. Here I’m using a plane/spokeshave blade to split the slate but a chisel will work too. Then I’m breaking the slate with my hammer. Although I’m breaking the slate over my hardie, you could also hold the slate over the edge of a brick or something similar. I demonstrate these techniques in more detail in my Slate Mosaic course with @mosaicartsonline, along with other methods f

Throwback to this mosaic I made as part of a live demonstration during a Mosaic Arts Online YouTube event at the end of 2023. Six mosaic instructors (including me!) shared a short demo of a particular mosaic technique. It was like 6 mini classes rolled into one free session! I talked about how to set slate on edge to create texture, and worked on this mosaic in real time. The recording of the session is still available to view on the Mosaic Arts Online YouTube channel. My demo starts about 8 min

This month in my membership we are making mosaics inspired by rocks! Here’s one that I made as part of my 100 days project which was inspired by a photograph I took of a rock face. It’s made with pieces of limestone and flint, sent into a bed of pigmented tile adhesive/thinset. If you are interested in joining the membership, all the details on my website. When you join you’ll be able to watch the recording of last week’s teaching session as well as recordings of other past sessions. Plus there’

FINAL WEEK OF SALE! The final few Riverwoods mosaics, created by people in my membership programme, have just been reduced in price on my website. These mosaics were created by people in my membership programme in response to the Riverwoods conservation project, which aims to restore the health of Scotland’s rivers and surrounding woodlands. The mosaics were displayed in my exhibition at @madeinstirlingstore last year, and there are just a few left that are looking for a new home. All money from

Today’s prompt is to make a mosaic inspired by Fungus! We have covered a number of nature inspired prompts inside my membership programme, and this is a fun one to explore. You can take inspiration from the colours and shapes of fungus, or explore designs related to the underground networks of mycelium. So many rabbit holes to dive down! When we did this prompt in the membership I showed members how to use an inspiration image to develop a design and then demonstrated how to put the mosaic toget

A little bit of relaxing mosaic making to start the week! I’m busy preparing for a review session inside my membership this week, where we’ll be taking a look back at some of the fabulous work that members have created. There are so many great mosaics to choose from I’m having a hard time choosing which ones to spotlight! Those who are already on the membership waitlist have been invited to attend this live session too to give them a flavour of what they can expect if they decide to join! The me

I’m knee deep in admin this week, but last week I managed to finally finished off this seed pod inspired mosaic. It had been sitting on my desk for almost 2 months and from most angles looked complete, but there was just a patch that still needed finishing off. It only took me an hour or so to get it done once I actually sat down to work on it, and it feels good to have finished! I’m now ready to start something new (once my admin is all done!!) Have you got unfinished projects lurking in your s

The prompt for day 19 of my mosaic advent calendar is to set yourself a time limit to make a mosaic. Giving yourself a time limit encourages you to make quick decisions and not overthink things. You can choose whatever time limit feels comfortable for you, but I suggest allowing at least an hour. Small projects like this mini mosaic that I’m making here are good ones, as you only have a small surface area to fill and can create a nice finished piece in one sitting. I sometimes set myself a time

Membership Sale: Get your first month half price with the code JAN50. I often get asked about what materials are needed to make the projects in my membership programme. And the answer is that you can use whatever you like! I’m a firm believer in using what you already have and what is easily accessible for you. Most mosaic projects can be adapted to work with the materials you have, and the beauty of this is that the mosaic becomes more personal and individual to you. During the practical demons

Today’s prompt for my mosaic advent calendar is to make a mosaic that uses interstices as a key feature. ‘Interstices’ is another name for the gaps between the pieces in your mosaic. They are really important for helping the eye understand what is going on in your mosaic. You can use interstices to create extra lines in your mosaic. You can see me do this in the mosaic I’m making in the video. You can also use interstices to outline features within your mosaic. If you’d like to learn more about

I’ve called today’s prompt ‘Filling in the Gaps’ because that is basically what you are doing. It’s a technique that can be useful to incorporate organic shaped pieces into a mosaic. You make sure you have a mix of different sized pieces, and then set them all into your mosaic, flowing in the same direction. Start with the larger pieces and use smaller and smaller pieces to fill in the gaps. You can see some examples of this technique in the video. If you need more help putting this into practic
