EXPLORING SPRING HILL (Tenn.) BATTLEFIELD — On Nov. 29, 1864, the Battle of Spring Hill unfolded as a confused and largely inconclusive encounter in which miscommunication and command failures allowed Maj. Gen. John Schofield’s Union army to move unimpeded past Confederate forces under Gen. John Bell Hood. Though fighting broke out during the afternoon and evening, the Confederates failed to block the Columbia Pike, enabling the Union column to withdraw toward Franklin and setting the stage for
